After the washout of the abandoned game on Saturday at Longridge, the Eagles knew they needed something from the Easter Monday game at home versus Southport Hesketh.
There were a couple of changes made from Saturday’s game and for the opening 30 minutes it was a pretty even contest. Then the breakthrough came from a quick throw in from Jack Cowen, which found the feet of Simon Whaley, who in turn crossed to Taylor Jones who slotted it home for 1 nil. And that’s how it remained at the break.
Ten minutes into the second half and a great strike from outside the box by midfielder Kirtis Monson was only handed away by the Southport keeper, which kindly fell to Taylor Jones, who made no mistake again for 2 nil. Soon after Whaley’s free kick found Mike Ashton who no mistake for 3, and then some neat play found Kirtis Monson unmarked at the back post for 4 nil. Then on 90 minutes Eagley’s defence were caught out and Simon Hill got what turned out to be a consolation goal for the visitors.
This was a good performance and vital 3 points for a resilient Eagley side who now sit in 11th place in the West Lancs Premier League with 20 points. Manager Simon Whaley was clearly happy with his side and said, ‘ I told the lads before the game, the next few games are vital as we play the teams around us and we cannot let points slip. We need to show that fight and desire now for every game.’
